You should know upfront, this is not a gay hostel. Room007 Hostel Chueca is located in the gay neighborhood, Chueca. It’s right in the center of the action. Although I gotta say upfront, it wasn’t my favorite hostel but that shouldn’t imply that it is not a great hostel. It’s also 16 Euros per night… Super cheap…
Room007 is located 2 blocks from Chueca Metro station. However, I still managed to get lost. I’m directionally impaired.
How to Get to Room007 Hostel Chueca
As soon as you exit the Chueca Metro station, you’ll land in a busy restaurant square. There’s a rainbow banner above this station. See it? Great! Now walk forward and turn left on the first street you get to. This is Calle de Gravina. You’ll walk two blocks slightly uphill. In the second block, you’ll be forced to turn right or left. Turn left. This is Calle de Hortaleza. Room007 Hostel Chueca is located on your left a few doors down. If you walk by a Wok 4 You Asian restaurant, you’ve gone too far.
Let me back up a bit. There’s another Room007 Ventura. This is not the correct hostel. Don’t get confused.
Room007 Hostel Chueca Review
Reception is 24 hours which is great if you’re coming in from a late flight. Upon arriving. They scramble a bit. It’s not their fault. They’re training someone new. She doesn’t know what she’s doing yet and she’s asking lots of questions as a new employee. This makes my check-in process a little longer than expected.
The entrance is great. It’s fun and edgy. The ceilings are covered in metal wires with a giant ROOM 007 above it. The long hallway is covered in colorful chalk art.
I get my keys and bed number. There’s a 5 Euro deposit for the key. I’m on the fifth floor. They call their elevators ascenders (in Spanish), not lifts, not elevators. Shockingly the concierge expected I knew where I was going. He wasn’t rude or anything but the hallway splits in two. If you go the wrong way you’ll hit the restrooms. I suppose you’ll figure that out if you don’t ask.
ROOM007 Hostel Chueca Room
I get to my room. It’s massive. There are 6 bunk beds. It’s a room for 12. It’s chic and edgy. I’m in a loft. I’m not sure if all floors are lofty like this but it’s so cute. I love it.
There’s a toilet and shower stall downstairs and one upstairs near the bunks. There are several skylights within the room, giving it natural light.
There’s one guy sleeping so I tip toe around making sure not to wake him.
The lockers are next to someone’s bunk. It’s a tight fit. I might not be able to open it if someone’s sleeping for fear of waking them.
This hostel assigns your bed as opposed to choosing an empty bed. I got a corner bunk. Although, the bed is perfectly adequate. I only have one thin pillow to work with and one sheet. Some beds are separated by walls. This is great but it made it difficult for me to get in and out of my bunk. I had one small opening. I’m not a big guy but I have broad shoulders. I have to wiggle my way in and out. The people next to me heard and felt me get in and out of bed each day.
Tip: Always bring earplugs… My allergies got so bad during this week, I had trouble breathing at night. I’m sure I snored so loudly people wanted to strangle me in my sleep.
Each bed has a separate light for you to use. However, there’s only one lamp in the room. Once it gets dark, forget about seeing anything without your little reading light.
The rooms are clean. So are the showers. Although I have to say both showers were out of soap each time I used them. I’m glad I bring my own.
Room007 Hostel Chueca Amenities
Located on the 5th floor is a great lounge space. Not sure if each floor has this but it has a great kitchen. There’s a fridge for groceries. We have pots and pans, dishes, etc. There’s a vending machine. On the opposite end, there’s a bean bag lounge which is always in use. The outdoor terrace is by far my favorite. It’s beautiful. It has five chairs and an ashtray for smokers. The view is great. The buildings are colorful and colonial.
Tip: Many people come to the bean bag area to sleep. It’s a great and comfy spot to fight your jet lag without being in your room all day.
I should mention, it’s September at the moment and the AC’s in the spaces are having a hard time keeping up. The place is a little stuffy and most of the time I’m sweating through my shirt. I lowered the AC in my room but there’s a 22-degree celsius limit. You can’t go below that. I like my rooms arctic.
Breakfast is every morning at around 7:30 am but it’s not free. It’s 2 Euros. It’snot bad but I like my free breakfast.
Breakfast includes coffee, orange juice, water. I had plenty of donuts to eat and several croissants. There’s also ham, cheese, hard-boiled eggs and bananas, cereals and stuff.
During the day, the breakfast area turns into a restaurant. I didn’t eat here but I’m sure the place is good.
One bad reviewer stated he hated the windows in his room. This building is typical of the area. With a courtyard in the middle (which is used by the restaurant,) but the light is always on. Each room has windows in the restaurant. I thought it was going to be noisy. I prepared myself with earplugs and a sleeping mask. My room was so dark and quiet, I didn’t need them. I’m
not sure what that guy was talking about.
Every night someone came by our room for the hostel bar crawl. They hit a few bars and clubs. It’s about 30 Euros I think… maybe less… I didn’t go but the guy told me they literally start at 10:30 pm and don’t come back until 7 or 8 in the morning. Sounds too intense for me. The old man in me can’t hang anymore.
What About The Ambiance?
The ambiance was okay. I can’t say it was unfriendly or anything. Everyone is very polite and always greeted you. However, no one actually made an effort to befriend anyone. Some people were in groups. The solo travelers stuck to themselves. It’s not a bad thing, just giving you some info.
I didn’t mind. I pretty much did my thing each day. This is not a party hostel which is fine by me. However, if you’re looking for a party you can definitely find one in Chueca, Madrid’s gay neighborhood.
Let Me Break It Down For You:
I paid 16 Euros per night. Not too bad.
Pros:
- It’s in the middle of the gay area. Walking distance to many clubs and bars.
- There are plenty of great restaurants and coffee shops nearby.
- Amazing shopping districts and pedestrian only streets one street over.
- Cute neighborhood
- Clean hostel.
- Big rooms
- Cute restaurant
- Great kitchen and lounge area
- The terrace is so cute
- Everyone is polite
- 24 hour reception
- You get a towel and linens
- bar hopping every night!
Cons:
- Doesn’t have a lot of atmosphere
- Although everyone is polite and nice I didn’t make any friends here
- AC had trouble keeping up. It was stuffy.
- Breakfast is 2 Euros per day
- Storing your luggage after you check out is 2 Euros
- No light in my room. Once it gets dark, your only source is mainly the reading light in your bed. Maybe other rooms have better light?
- There are no towels in the public restroom spaces. Except for the one near the restaurant. That one has a hand dryer.
Do I recommend it? For 16 Euros per day, yes! But let me elaborate…For all intent and purposes, Room007 Hostel Chueca is great. However, if you’re looking for friends as a solo traveler I don’t recommend it. Otherwise, I would say go for it. It’s a great way to see the area. It’s also pretty cheap. I don’t think I’ll stay here next time but I definitely want to stay in Chueca again.
