How to get from BER into the city of Berlin

I landed in BER (Berlin Brandenburg Airport “Willy Brandt”). Berlin’s new airport.

This new airport also engulfed Shonefeld airport and was converted into BERs terminal 5. This means there is only one airport in the city now as they’ve permanently shut Tegal Airport.

I landed in BER terminal 2.

The actual address of the airport is Willy-Brandt-Platz 2, 12529 Schönefeld.

If you’re like me and now you’re wondering how to get into the city, keep reading to find out, because I had to figure it out first hand and I want to pass on all the information to you.

Finding the Train System from Terminals 1 and 2 Inside BER

Chances are you’re going to land in Terminal 1 or 2.

Once you land, follow the signs that read either Exit, Baggage Claim, or Airport City.

These signs all take you to the same place.

It’s a good 10 minutes walk until you reach baggage claim. If you have baggage, make sure to grab them before heading out of the terminal because you won’t be able to enter once you’ve exited.

Once you exit your terminal, find the trains into the city. The trains are located under Terminal 1 on level U2.

From here, you’ll have to get the escalators that take you down.

There will be a ticket office on the far right. A ticket on the S9 (S-Bahn) and the FEX (Airport express train) both cost the same 3.80 Euros.

Don’t forget to validate your ticket before boarding on one of the machines on the platform.

BER Terminal 5

Terminal 5 is connected via S-Bahn. Line S9 goes from Terminal 1 and 2 to Terminal 5 and vice versa. Although, right now, there’s an announcement that clearly says flights are not departing from it at this time. But this will change in the future.

Now, Which Train Platform do You Choose?

Once you’ve purchased your ticket, continue walking forward. You’ll see platform numbers. Check the monitors for the FEX train to HBF or Hauptbahnhof station. That’s the central station.

I took both (S9 and FEX) trains for fun at one point. The main difference is FEX takes about 30 minutes to get into the central station. The S9 train takes about an hour and 20 minutes, but you get a nice view of the city. (Currently, FFP2 masks are required on all public transportation, although no one is enforcing it).

If you’re like me and my friend, you’ll be very tired by the time you arrive in Berlin, and you won’t care about scenic beauty at this point.

I’m sure right now all you want is a bed!

A Video Tutorial on How to Get from BER to Central Station in Berlin (Hauptbahnhof)

Check the description of the YT video for detailed step-by-step instructions too.

From Central Station to Your Destination

From Central Station, all of our journeys will differ, so you might need to take other train lines to your hotel/bnb.

Here’s what I did.

There are information booths at each end of the third floor (before exiting the station). You can ask them how to head to your hotel, and they will print out a roadmap for you.

Please remember that the train ticket you purchased at the airport works on all public transit in Berlin (excluding taxis) for a couple of hours before it expires. Therefore there is no need to buy another ticket.

So, if you need to take a bus or a tram, you can use the same ticket.

I hope this has shown you how to get from BER and into the city.
