Every time I go back to Germany, I look for unique things to do in Berlin because this city is so incredible there’s bound to be something I missed.
If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, then you know I write a lot about gay sex and give you in-depth reviews of the gay sex scene here in Berlin and other hot gay cities like Madrid. But one thing I love that I don’t often talk about is art.
I’m going to Berlin soon, and on this itinerary, I am looking for sites that represent me more holistically. After all, we all love sex, but I also love me some industrial electronic music and wild art.
So, let’s find some of those incredible yet unique things to do in Berlin.
Unique Things to Do in Berlin, Germany
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room, shall we? On my last couple of Berlin trips, I wasn’t able to get to everything on my itinerary even though I was there for over a month. There’s just so much to do.
Regardless, I try to outdo myself every year and see what other awesome things I can write about. So, if you’ve kept up with my blog, you probably noticed that I wasn’t able to write a review on some of the gay sexy venues on this list. Not because I didn’t go, but because I only went once and didn’t get a good feel for the place. So this time, I’ll have to go a few times to tell you what they’re like.
Sexy gay Berlin venues are pretty much a given on this blog! But now we can also find some of the off-the-beaten-path Berlin venues I’m excited to explore.
1) Berlin’s Latest Gay Venue: Boyberry
Other than some of the gay horny sites in Berlin I haven’t been able to write a review on; there is a new site.
I’m sure, by now, you’ve heard that Toms is now permanently closed, and a Boyberry went inside.
If you read my BoyBerry Madrid review, you’ll see how much I disliked this venue. However, Berlin’s demographics are different, so let’s go and see how different it actually is.
2) Hunger Games Sites
Fun fact: The popular dystopian movie The Hunger Games was filmed in Berlin, and you can find many sites as you go about your days.
You can find District 13, the lecture hall, the Department of War, and so many more Hunger Games sites. I just might do this on my own!
3) Paradox Museum in Berlin
The Paradox Museum looks fun and trippy, but it also reminds me of the Museum of Illusions. If you read my review of the Museum of Illusions, you’ll see that I didn’t like it—not because it wasn’t good, but because it’s not made for solo travelers.
Rasmus said he might come with me, so if he decides, this museum will be worth the visit. Finding unique things to do in Berlin or other fun cities is always fun.
4) Deutsche Kinemathek
A museum about audiovisiual technology looks super sleek and awesome. Although as I’m writing this, their website says their permanent exhibition is closing at the end of October 2024 but it also suggests they have a temporary space opening in 2025. So I might be able to catch their old space but not their new upcoming temporary space.
Check out their website for Virtual Tours of some of the current spaces.
5) Harry Potter Store
I love sci-fi, fantasy, and horror movies. I LOVE EM. Having a standalone Harry Potter store that’s not part of an amusement park and made to look weird, magical, and Harry Potteresque sounds fantastic.
So why not go and make this day as magical as possible?
6) Boros Collection
It doesn’t get more off the beaten path in Berlin than the Boros Collection. I mean, this is a WWII bunker. But it’s not what you think. This is not a WWII site per se. It’s actually a museum where they display contemporary and modern art.
In actuality, it’s a converted space that’s been repurposed, and what’s more unique than that?
The cold space, with chipped paint, gives it an otherwordly feel.
How’s that for unique things to do in Berlin? I’m in. Let’s go!
7) Parliament of Trees
I don’t know how I’ve missed this site. It’s free, and I love free sites. This performance art site was created as a memorial for those who died due to the Berlin Wall.
It’s only open on weekends (Fri through Sun) from noon to 5 pm.
8) Unique Abandoned Gas Station
Berlin used to have a ton of incredible abandoned places, filled with graffiti and urban chaos, that probably inspired many sci-fi horror movies. But year after year, they are either tearing them down or refurbishing them.
The great thing about Berlin is that they know how to keep their unique style, which you can only see in a place like this.
Although there are fewer of these unique things to do in Berlin, this time around, you can visit an ex-abandoned gas station that is now a museum with a cafe.
The space is temporary, but if it’s around when I visit, I want to see it and report back.
9) A Ubahn Tour?
Okay, the Ubahn itself (a subway) is not unique, so does it count as part of my unique things to do in Berlin list? Yes, let me tell you why.
BVG provides a tour in an open roof train. You are given a hardhat and you go about the city. It almost makes it feel like an old mining train system. And trains are pretty cool. Berlin has many layers and my love of trains makes this exciting, but Berlin and its history makes this unique.
However, I have to say, I’ve discovered in my research that April through October the tour is only in German. Since this is when I’ll be in Berlin, I don’t think I’ll be able to make this. But I’m leaving it here in case you want to check it out.
They do have English tours available, but it’s at a date and time TBD.
Let’s Break it down:
I write these lists for you as much as for myself. I love doing the research first (and I’m sure many reading this want this information). And I want a place where I can come back to it, like my blog. Because you know I’m going to head to each of these and tell you whether these places are actually worth your time.
For now, here is the list of things I want to see and report on this time around:
- BoyBerry Berlin
- Hunger Game Sites
- paradox Museum
- Deutsche Kinemathek
- Boros Collection
- Parliament of Trees
Not only are these sites off the beaten path, but they will make your trip unique and memorable, and that is worth it in my book.
