Solo Travelers Be Weary of The Museum of Illusions, Here’s Why

Yesterday, I stumbled upon the Museum of Illusions in Madrid, Spain. If you’re from any big city, you’ll notice a Museum of Illusions in your city as well.

The Museum of Illusions is not unique to Madrid. But I was eating next door, and it was very convenient to hop on over and check it out.

I’m from LA. And LA also has one. However, I would never do this in LA because Los Angeles makes everything difficult.

Not only is the museum in the pit of Hollywood, but it will take two hours to get to, there will be NO parking, so you’ll have to pay, and another two hours to drive back.

A simple one-hour museum has now turned into an all-day event with rude ass people on the freeway cursing you out for turning on your blinker.

So, now, here, in Madrid, everything is so easy to walk to, making things stress-free.

The Dilemma of the Solo Traveler

The concept of the Museum of Illusions is a good one. However, the main focus is taking pictures for social media, which is a fun way to share your memories of the fun time you just had.

And if you’re there by yourself, the museum has employees who can take a picture for you. It sounds like they’ve worked everything out.

As I walked through the first floor of the Museum of Illusions, it was hard to see what the illusion was actually about.

A few sticks stood on end at one portion and a triangular tube at the next.

Upon reading the description and directions, you realize you actually need more than one person for all of these. And in many cases, it’s best to have a group of friends, or the pictures don’t come out as they should.

To make things a tad more complicated, the illusion only works once you’ve seen it in the pictures.

So, I could only partake in a couple of these since I was traveling solo. The employees took a picture of one for me, like the one below.

But in many instances, you needed two friends and a third to take a picture and make it work.

This museum just doesn’t work for the solo traveler. But that’s not to say it’s not a fun place.

Types of Installations

They have a lot of simpler illusions on the walls, images that show you something else when you take a picture of it. There are classic symbols you probably remember seeing growing up that look like they’re different sizes, but when placed on top of each other, they’re not.

There’s the typical spinning cylinder you encounter at a carnival that makes you feel as though you’re about to fall over. Those are always fun, here or at a carnival.

And then there are all the great ones. The room of optical illusions which makes small people big and big people small.

There’s an upside-down room that makes it look like you’re walking on the ceiling.

There’s a box with a plate on it that makes it look like your head is on a platter.

All of these are fun, but the illusion, the magic, only really works if you’re there with a group. That’s because several people need to be in the image while one takes the photo. In some of these, a party of two may suffice.

Who is This Museum Good For?

This museum is good for groups of friends and families. If you’re traveling with your pack, this can be a fun and memorable experience. It will make the experience so much better with your family, kids, or group of friends.

There is some reading and rules to follow to understand how to take a picture for each illusion, but the photos will look fantastic.

If you’re a solo traveler like me, other museums might be better for you.

If you’re new to my blog, I should mention I am not telling you what to do. By all means, go check out the museum and decide for yourself. I simply aim to inform based on my first-hand experience.

Let’s break it down

When did having more than one person in your group become mandatory? Museums are a few of the great things you can do solo. I’m disappointed that I could not enjoy it as a solo traveler.

About 50 percent of the installations I couldn’t take pictures of because it just wouldn’t make sense for one person to be in the photo, even if the employees took it for me.

The ticket was 15 Euros, so not that pricey. But I’m very glad I did it in Madrid and not LA.

If you’re a solo traveler, what do I recommend? Skip this and head to another incredible, fun museum that is perfect for solo (and group) travelers like Ikono.
