It took us forever to get to it. It was your classic story of two guys trying to get their fix of tasty, one-of-a-kind burgers with obstacles in the way.
Although it was no “Harold and Kumar go to White Castle,” it was more Rasmus and James zig-zag through Berlin and finally get to Crack Buns.
But first, we need to back up and start at the beginning.
What is Crack Buns?
Crack Buns is a slider restaurant (so, mini burgers, in other words). I found them when looking for tasty places everyone must try in Berlin.
When I first found the restaurant, it didn’t really mean much until I saw they had Mochi Mochi fries and Japanese salad. To me, that meant Crack Buns must be a Japanese burger fusion restaurant, and that means I have to try it!
Where is Crack Buns?
Crack Buns recently moved to a new location, Prinzenstraße 85d, 10969 Berlin.
Right off the Moritzplatz U Bahn station.
So it’s pretty convenient if you’re trying to get to it. But I had some trouble. Not because it’s hard to find, but because I’m directionally challenged, and I was showing my friend Rasmus some Berlin sites before ending our night here.
Here is a map for your convenience:
Our Experience Getting to Crack Buns
The reason it took us forever to get to Crack Buns is that I wanted to show Rasmus some Berlin sites.
So we took the U Bahn to Brandenburg Gate and began our journey there.
After soaking up the scene and walking around, listening to the street musicians, and soaking in the little sun we could, we decided to check out the Memorial for Murdered Jews across the street.
I wanted to make sure Rasmus got a well-rounded Berlin experience.
We paid our respect to the memorial, walked through it, absorbed the monument, and headed towards Potsdamer Platz to see pieces of the Berlin Wall and read up on the history of this location.
From here, we tried to get on the train at Potsdamer Platz but got lost looking for the correct station. After we found it, we took about three lines, a couple of stops, transferred a few times, and almost ended up at our final destination.
Upon getting to the last transfer point, many police and ambulances approached the station and halted all train traffic. Oh, the drama.
The police take one guy off the platform, and now all trains are suspended.
We were at our last transfer, one stop away. So close! Should we just walk, I thought. But soon afterward, the U Bahn signs refreshed, and a train came right away.
So we packed ourselves on this incredibly packed train like a couple of sardines in a can and got off on Moritzplatz. I swear I felt someone trying to pickpocket me. But I’m from LA, so I’m paranoid. Berlin is safe, but I still keep an eye out.
When we arrived at the location, it was closed. It said pick-up only. What?!
I had a slight panic attack. We did not just do all of this to come to the wrong place.
So we walked a little more and found that this was, indeed, the wrong location. It’s the Uber Foods pick-up zone, but Crack Buns is next door.
At last, we made it, and now we can relax and enjoy ourselves.
This adventure had a lot of fun sites, beautiful music, nice sunlight, and some Berlin city chaos that made it worth the fun and effort.
Crack Buns Review
We finally made it. We thought after so many obstacles, we weren’t going to taste what this was all about. We just hoped it was worth it. And let me tell you upfront, it is worth it! I’m so glad we came here to eat.
Upon entering the restaurant, you’ll notice the decor. It has big wooden tables and ivy wallpaper on all sides.
The light is dim, and there is low music playing in the background.
There are only two other people in here besides Rasmus and me.
We make it to the cashier and order.
I get the Swiss and Mushroom sliders.
I make mine a meal with Mochi Mochi fries, a Coke, and add a side of Kaarage Chicken Bites.
I figured if I came all the way here to try it, I might as well try as many things as I could fit in my stomach.
Rasmus ordered the two blue cheese sliders, the combo version as well.
After paying, the cashier gave us a pager. Like the ones you used to get at TGIFridays.
When our order was ready, that thing rang like the police found us guilty of some crime we didn’t commit. It scared me and made me jump.
For a second, I thought it was the building alarm.
After realizing it was our order, I walk to the cash register and pick up our plates.
Crack Buns Taste and Flavors
Rasmus and I decided to swap one slider, so we each have one Swiss and Mushroom slider and one Blue Cheese slider.
The first thing I noticed was the Mochi Mochi fries. They weren’t classic French fries. They were long, rectangularly made. Someone took the time to make these and sculpt them this way.
And although I’m not sure what their secret ingredients are, I’m going to try to guess. The fries were soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. I’m guessing it’s mashed potato wrapped with Mochi (like Mochi ice cream). Then deep-fried, or maybe flash-fried.
They only give you a handful of them, but every bite is a mouthful of flavor.
We dipped them in our Crack Bun sauce, which resembles chipotle and truffle oil. It’s decadent, and we couldn’t get enough.
The Sliders
Next, we went for the sliders themselves. These cute, somewhat small sliders on what seemed like a Hawaiian King bun were packed full of stuff.
The Swiss and Mushroom burger had melted cheese and sauteéd mushrooms that were falling out as you picked up your burger.
I took a bite, and it made me happy I chose this. Sometimes you’re not happy with your selection, but this was good.
The combination of Mochi Fries and a Crack Bun burger made the trip worth it.
I then tried the Blue Cheese slider. And although this burger is more of a regular BLT, it was still a good burger.
So, don’t freak out, but I hate bacon. And this burger has bacon in it. I didn’t remove it because I wanted to taste it all.
I liked the bacon on this slider. It was candied, which didn’t taste so much like bacon to me. It passed the test. It made the overall slider sweet.
I was happy. Both Rasmus and I were happy.
The Chicken Bites
I took the first chicken bite. Bit into it just to taste, then dip it in Crack Bun sauce. I preferred it with sauce. But I liked them.
They’re crunchy and decent. Although, as far as they go, I enjoyed the rest of my meal better. But that’s not to say I didn’t like the Chicken Bites.
Rasmus thought they were too spicy for him, so he stopped eating them. I didn’t think they were spicy, but Rasmus doesn’t eat any chili.
They were good enough for me. I ate the rest and had a happy, full belly.
After finishing our meal, Rasmus returned the cafeteria-style trays back to the cashier and said goodbye.
It was a great adventure with a good ending. Both Rasmus and I were glad to have ventured here to try the Crack Buns of Berlin.
Let’s break it down:
Crack Buns is a slider joint located in the Kreuzberg area. The address is: Prinzenstraße 85d, 10969 Berlin.
The sliders are great. I preferred the Swiss and Mushroom over the Blue Cheese slider, but I enjoyed both.
The Mochi fries are AMAZING!
The chicken bites are decent.
The restaurant is chic and fun.
Not super expensive either. We paid about 12 Euros per meal.
Do I recommend it? Yes. Try them out. It’s worth it.
