It wasn’t until my 3rd time to Berlin that I actually visited the gay bars. And I started at Woofs. And wow, was I blown away!
I arrived at Tegal (TXL) Airport and stayed at the Hilton Hotel, with a friend who was already there for the first couple of days. When I arrived, I received a text that said he was going to be out with some buddies but we could meet up later.
I made it to my hotel around 7:30 pm and decided I wanted to stay awake for the rest of the night. Last time I was here I was jet-lagged the entire time. I could not adjust. This time I was going to do it right.
I made the mistake of going on Google reviews and every single gay bar had bad reviews. The reviews were of people being told to leave because they don’t like Arabians or Asians at their bars. Rude bartenders telling customers they are not willing to serve them… Oh, and the good reviews were of people stating that they’re glad they turn away people of color because they don’t like them. I’m a Latino American of Mexican descent. Many people say I look Arabian. Naturally, all of this scared me. I didn’t know what to expect. I thought, well if I have a bad time, I don’t have to go back… I am on vacation after all.
I looked up gay bars in the area and noticed WOOF’s had a 2 for 1 beer special today (Tuesday night). Great! Let’s do it. I get on the subway head over to WOOF’s. It looks closed. Then I saw a gentleman ring the doorbell and get buzzed in. I thought that was a bit strange, but whatever, when in Berlin, right?
I rang the bell and got buzzed in. The place was busy. Lots of guys. Mostly, hairy, bearded and bearish types. Many were big men. I like hanging out with bear type guys because (at least in The States) they’re the least pretentious. Therefore, I thought this would be a good way to ease into the gay scene here. Without pretentiousness.
I get there and ring the bell. I get buzzed in and check my coat. I didn’t know this at the time, but the owner handled the coat check this day. I received my coat-check number and I grabbed a beer.

From here on it was a text war with me and my friend. He was running late and eventually, he canceled on me. It’s cool, definitely not a big deal. I’m an independent kinda guy. I continue drinking. I make a lot of great friends. Everyone is really welcoming. I meet a few locals that give me the rundown of the city. Since I arrived on a Tuesday, they tell me which place has which parties on any given day. I made a mental note of all the parties, made a lot of friends and had a blast.
At one point I got curious about the darkroom in the back and I asked the guy I met about it, he told me it was a place where people have sex. Then he told me to do a quick walkthrough. He said no one will judge me for seeing what was going on. I made a quick walk-through and OH MY GOD… Everyone was getting it on back there. I had to walk over people to get back out.
By the end of the night, I met a guy sitting next to the bar. He tells me he is good friends with the owner, the guy who checked my coat. Then he says, the owner told him, when I walked in, that I was a very exotic and good-looking person. It felt nice to feel appreciated.
I’m glad this bar is a place you can have a good time, whatever that is for you.
The subway doesn’t run all night during weekdays. At 1 am I decided it was probably best to call it a night. I took a cheap 12 Euro cab back to my hotel where I saw my friend laying in his bed, watching some TV. We caught up briefly before we both went to bed for the night.
My Last Trip to Woof Berlin
Looking for something to do on Tuesday night. Woof’s is the place to be. It’s busy! Don’t let people tell you there’s nothing to do in Berlin on Tuesday. Also, even though Woof’s calls itself a bear bar, everyone in Berlin knows Woofs is the place to be. There will be all kinds of men. Even if you’re not into bears, you’ll see all types here.
I came here on Friday, September 21st this year. One of my hostel mates wanted to check it out. It was their first Oktoberfest night. The place was packed to the brim. The beer flowed graciously. Men played in the backroom. The people are chatty. People literally came up to me and sparked conversations. It’s a great time.
Although it was a Friday night. I’m not sure it’s this busy every Friday. I’ll have to go back and see… But if you’re in town for Oktoberfest, check out Woofs on Friday… You might just find that hairy beast you’re looking for.
Let me break it down for you:
Woofs Tuesday night is 2 for 1 beers. The beers are about 3 or 4 Euros. You save your receipt and use that to get another beer for free. It’s very busy. People are very friendly. You can spark up a conversation with just about anyone. You can also cruise around if you want and hook up with someone in the darkroom. What more could you want? It was a good way to ease myself into the gay scene.
Do I recommend Woofs? Yes. Tuesdays are hopping. I went the next Monday, it was still busy, but not as busy as a Tuesday night.
