As the sun began to fall I decided to go for a walk through the Village. After stopping for dinner and having a drink I walked towards Washington Square Park. By the time I got to 2nd and 2nd I noticed a neon sign and a door that looked like it was about to fall off. The neon sign was of a rooster. It was The Cock. The decadent gay bar that I remember being in Alphabet City.
I decided to walk in and review this place.
The last and only time I was at The Cock it was more of a European style bar where gay men could be men and everything goes.
I looked at the crowd and sat at the bar. I noticed lots of straight women and even men with their lesbian counterparts. I don’t remember there being women the last time I was there (considering this bar was known for guys trying to get it on with each other).
Since it was around 10 pm the beer prices were very reasonable for NYC. I ordered a beer from the bartender, sipped, and observed. There were two types of bartenders a native New Yorker and a non-native New Yorker. I could tell because the New Yorker spoke his mind at all times, including if you were waving him down for a beer. “I’LL GET TO YOU WHEN I GET TO YOU! I SEE YOU, DONT TELL ME HOW TO DO MY JOB…” the native New Yorker yelled at the guy sitting next to me. It didn’t offend me because that’s how New Yorkers are… I can see how this can be perceived as rude. The rest of the bartenders were very polite.
There were many men by themselves just sitting and drinking their beer. It seems like this place has lost its edge. There was no smoke filling the rooms, no one trying to get it on with each other. In fact, I was a little bored. The only thing that was remotely exciting were the lesbians screaming at each other and causing a scene.
I got up to use the restroom and lost my space at the bar. I decided to sit next to an awesome guy of Indian descent on the couch. He was very friendly. We began to talk and I decided to ask him about the bar. The guy said he loves this place because it gets really busy but not until around midnight. I asked him if people still come here to hook up and have a great time. He walked me through it and told me about the dungeon. It’s not open until 11 pm and it doesn’t get full until midnight. He also said people still come here to have sex. This made me feel like perhaps I was here on an off night since the crowd was tame (it was Saturday).
At 11 pm they opened the basement dungeon and me and my new friend went to explore. The basement is very big. It has its own bar and dance floor. There are booths for smaller crowds as well. It’s a big space.
I observed others. They were very stand-offish. At one point I noticed a guy putting his hand on someone’s thigh. The guy overreacted, freaked out, and literally ran away. I was almost ashamed for him. If you’re not interested a simple and polite “I’m not interested” would suffice. I was starting to feel like I needed to leave.
My new friend assured me that the dance floor is where the action happens and I wanted to see it.
We go to the dance floor and I hear two guys talking about how disgusting it is to have sex with someone they don’t know. Is this place for real? it’s definitely lost its edge if those are the types of people who are here.
I continue to dance with my friend until the dance floor got more and more crowded. At this point, I start seeing guys looking down at something at the other end of the dance floor. I walk over and this overly crowded section of the dance floor has started the party. Guys were being blown by the groups. It was like a porn set.
This caused a chain reaction. I turned around and more and more people were dropping to their knees and taking off their pants and getting it on. It seemed that the “stand-offish-ness” was now gone. Everyone wanted to have a good time.
The more I stood there, the more people got into it. Guys were being plowed. Men were sucking each other off. I even saw a guy eagerly pleasing a group of six.
I looked around and didn’t see any straight women or lesbians. I asked my friend if they allow them down here. He said lesbians come here to have sex as well but there aren’t any tonight… Or at least I didn’t see any.
At this point, I decided to leave and walk back to my hotel, The Jane Hotel. The Cock is a New York experience like no other. I highly recommend it.
Let me break it down for you:
Reviews online say it’s $20 at the door after 11. I went before 10 pm and didn’t pay a cover. Service is good but they are very New York… Some people will find that rude, just go with it and have a good time. The drinks weren’t that expensive.
The dungeon opens at 11 pm but the party doesn’t get started until after midnight. Get there early, stay out late.
Is this place worth it? Oh YES! Give it a shot. Have fun and please watch your wallets (just in case).
They’re located at 93 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10009… Near the corner of 2nd Ave and 2nd St.
Their website sucks and won’t give you any valuable information but here it is if you want it: http://thecockbar.com/
I am due a visit this summer but I know very well the experience you speak of with the stand offish people. Been visiting there during my summer vacation for a few years now.
Hey there. Thanks for your comment. Its the one negative I thought. Doesnt mean i wont go back to visit tho. It was a fun time regardless.
