I love art. And, I love Van Gogh. Naturally, I was drawn to the new Van Gogh Immersive Experience. So, while I was in New York City, I decided to give it a try. However, you might be wondering, is Van Gogh Immersive Experience Worth it? And, is it only in New York City?
I’ll go over my experience with you and let you know if it’s worth it for you or if you should stay away.
Where is the Immersive Van Gogh Experience?
In New York City, two competing companies created different versions of the immersive Van Gogh exhibit.
However, you should also be aware that five different traveling companies are going from big city to big city. And although they are currently in LA as well, chances are they’re coming to your city soon.
How Long is the Van Gogh Immersive Experience?
The Van Gogh Immersive Experience lasts about an hour and a half, depending on how fast you see the artwork or if you do any extra features. For example, there’s a virtual reality portion where you put on a headset and interact with the world around you.
There’s also a traditional portion of the exhibition where you can look, observe and take in artwork from Van Gogh. You can sit and read the excerpts about his life, or you can choose to skip it.
Depending on which one you attend, experiences will vary. The one I attended only had one giant room, but I’ve heard some have three or more.
Is the Van Gogh Immersive Experience Worth It?
So, is it worth it? This Van Gogh experience is great. It’s breathtaking in so many ways. It mixes both traditional museum features with a brilliant animated showroom that brings his best pieces to life. It is very much worth it! I was blown away.
The experience makes you feel as if you’re living inside his paintings. Mixed with beautiful music and quotes from Van Gogh himself, it will inspire you for sure.
I’ve studied Van Gogh throughout high school. Saw original artwork in Europe. I’ve also learned about his troublesome life as a hobby growing up. Therefore I looked forward to seeing it while in New York City.
But there’s a couple of things you might need to understand.
If you’re not an art fan going to this experience will not suddenly make you love art.
Although it’s impressive, you’re not suddenly going to develop a love for his technique or his life.
Also, if you’re here to find original paintings of Van Gogh, you won’t find that here.
They have replicas that are clearly printed on a large scale with incredible backstories.
I recommend it to all art lovers and Van Gogh fans. And although I would love everyone to try it out, if museums and exhibitions have never been you’re thing, chances are it’s not for you.
On the other hand, you only live once, so why not give it a try?
My Experience
I loved every bit of it. From the moment you walk in, the staircase is an exhibition on its own. It’s covered in Van Gogh sunflowers. Self-portraits line each landing. It feels special already.
Then I make it to the entrance.
I’m surprised there are so many people here. But what surprises me the most is that you can see his artwork hanging on the walls.
Although they’re not originals, they’re accompanied by his inspiration and backstory. A few paintings also cover his tragic life. Why he cut off his ear? And how much money his paintings made.
It’s educational as well as inspirational. The curators made some of his art into 3D representations you can walk into. It’s cute and unexpected.
But then you walk into a giant room with serene music. The walls are moving.
I worried that I would get vertigo because the floors also moved. I walked on projected high grass that swayed as I stepped.
The museum laid out rugs for people. Chairs filled the walls.
It was like having a picnic in an inspirational setting that only the media can do.
We are living inside a movie created and inspired by Van Gogh himself.
If only he were alive today, he would see how he changed the world.
The experience lasts about 45 minutes, but the entire exhibition is about an hour or an hour and a half.
They also have a VR immersion room where you sit and put on VR headsets.
And although I’m a HUGE VR fan, I opted not to do this because it was slightly more expensive and my partner does not like VR. So I didn’t want to sit while he got bored.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed this art experience very much. We need more inspiration and beauty in this world.
Let’s break it down:
There are two Immersive experiences in NYC at the moment. I went to the one called the Van Gogh Exhibit NYC: The Immersive Experience. It’s located at 300 Vesey St 3rd Floor, New York, NY 10282.
Prices vary, but my ticket was $42—a little pricey but not an issue. I enjoyed myself very much.
Did I think it was too short? No. I thought it was just right.
Do I recommend it? Yes. You’ll love it. I even teared up at one point. I love Van Gogh.
If you’re thinking about doing it and you love art or Van Gogh, do it!
