As the coronavirus continues to spread, all unnecessary travel is now deemed inadvisable. My original departure date for my move to Paris is on the 29th. So in about a week. I booked my plane ticket through American Airlines. So, here’s the big question. How do you cancel or change your plane ticket due to the coronavirus? Is there a process? Are they refunding you due to unprecedented circumstances? What should you and I do in this situation?
Let’s Dig a Little Deeper into American Airlines Policy
If you check out AA.COM, you’ll promptly see that they’re handling all cancelations. Although they encourage you not to call because of the sheer volume they’re currently handling. In fact, they’ve turned their website into a pretty good resource. You can now change your plane ticket or cancel your ticket all online.
At the moment, American Airlines is giving everyone a full refund for their ticket and is also waiving any change fees if you decide you want to move the flight to a month further down the road.
The coronavirus has put us in all kinds of situations, and American Airlines is trying to handle each of us properly.
The best situation is if your travel date is yet to come and you simply just want to cancel. That’s the boat I’m in now. In this case, all you have to do is head to AA.Com to find your trip and hit the “Cancel Trip” button. Voila! Done and done.
Situations That May Be Different Than Others
If you weren’t able to travel but also couldn’t get through to Americans reservations line, you can still call them, even after your travel date, and they will honor all changes.
If your flight has been canceled, make sure to read the email they’ve sent before you call American Airlines. That email will give you a 13 digit ticket number starting with “001” and your six-character confirmation or record locator number. Make sure you have those handy when you call.
Other situations may apply to you. However, I highlighted what I think are the most common at the moment.
Let me break it down for you:
Considering information is changing by the day, please check out aa.com for up to date information in case things change again.
I hope this helps.
