The End… of My First RTW Trip | HKG to LAX Cathay Pacific Business Class Review B777-300ER

Just in case you’re not familiar with a round the world trip (#RTW,) I wrote a blog post explaining what it is, most of the rules and what I did differently. You can read it here! That’s actually the first post to all the next string of blog posts until now. Sadly, this is the end of the round the world trip I started in LA (which is home base.) However, this means I get to do a Cathay Pacific Business Class Review B777-300ER from HKG (Hong Kong International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport) review. Enjoy!

The seats to the pod in Cathay Business Class

This last bit of the trip started out the way most of my trips end, with the end-of-trip blues… Something about the end of a trip gets me so sad I immediately start planning another one… and did I? Oh yes… My next trip proved to be a disaster but that’s for the next few blog posts and reviews.

Getting back to Cathay Pacific Business Class Review B777-300ER review. I checked out of our amazing hotel, The Ritz Carlton in Kowloon, took the escalators downstairs into the ICC mall and looked for the airport train. It’s so convenient. Gotta love mass transit in Hong Kong.

From the Airport Express (you can read more about getting around Hong Kong here) to the airport was a breeze.

I never check my bags so I didn’t do the pre-airport security bag check. With my bag in my hand I arrived at HKG and enjoyed a few snacks before getting on my flight. My partner got me into a fancy lounge in HKG and we had dinner and passed the time for an hour until our flight time came around. It was a good last meal for the end of a good trip.

The Pods

I didn’t realize Cathay had planes like this but I was in Business Class, thanks to my partner for upgrading me with his miles. Business class on this B777-300ER has one section that’s almost secluded and separated from the rest of the plane. It’s technically 2 rows of 4 pods and one wall on each side. It made for a very exclusive ride.

The pods themselves were nice. Big to say the least. The seats turn into a bed, which is a good thing since I was planning on sleeping the entire way there.

There is a giant flat screen tv with lots of movies to watch. However, if you fly as much as me, you’ve probably seen them all. The seats are wide enough for me and my wide shoulders. I really liked this pod configuration. It wasn’t so much the pod but the exclusivity of it all.

I slept for a good five hours. When I awoke I watched a movie and ordered a plate of dim sum which I devoured with the utmost intensity. The dim sum was sadly just okay… but at least it was dim sum… gotta love a plethora of dumplings.

Mmmmm lots of Dim Sum!

Cathay Pacific

Cathay Pacific is one of the best airlines I’ve had the pleaser of flying on. I love their work ethic. All the flight attendants are professional and non-invasive. That’s a plus considering I mostly like being left alone. Even my Uber rides, I get a little annoyed if the driver tries to make conversation with me… But, that’s just personal taste.

It also helps that I slept for part of it. I wanted to get on LA time right away since I was starting a new job the next business day.

Flying in business class, especially on Cathay Pacific really spoils you. Lets not forget they have Champagne on board… you can drink til your heart’s content. Or until you pass out.

Let me break it down for you:

I got lucky with this flight… We purchased this flight with all miles which means it was free.

We landed at LAX to an onslaught of noise, taxi drivers honking, TSA workers screaming at random people, annoyed pedestrians rushing by… oh home!

Luckily we had someone waiting for us when we arrived. We got picked up and headed straight home. It’s always good to be home, but I always hate saying good-bye.
