FLIGHT 2: Onward to South Africa, From DFW to GRU in Business Class on an American Airlines 777

We sit around DFW for a couple of hours before our flight from Dallas to Sao Paulo Brazil. This is one of two longer flights. This flight is a nice 9 hours long. However, the great thing about this 777 is their big Business Class! You get nice private pods the entire nine hours!

To give you some perspective, first class is at the front of the plane. It holds maybe, 4 pods total. It’s isolated and if there’s anything I’ve learned about myself is how much I like being away from everything and everyone.

Next comes, business class. If you’re lucky you get a smaller section where there are 8 pods sectioned off from the rest of business class. Thats what I am.

The seats are great because they’re tapered in a zig-zag fashion. This means you’re not at eye level with anyone. There is one seat at the window, two seats in the middle (where you can lift the middle console and close yourself off in case you’re seated with a stranger) and the other seat at the far window.

Me and my partner sit behind each other and both have a window seat. It’s the perfect set up.

With your very own flat screen TV that comes out of the wall with the push of a button and a seat that turns into a flat bed, you seriously don’t even feel like you’re on a plane. I mean, I was starting to get annoyed because we’re just sitting there forever. I wanted the plane to get in the sky already! I’m concentrating on a movie, distracted… I open the window and realize, we’re up in the air already. Here I thought, we were still waiting for takeoff.

I love the pod seating.

More about the pods

There’s plenty of compartments to store your shoes, gadgets, toiletries, etc. You have a small arm rest and a seat that extends to a complete bed. What more could you want? Well I can tell you, I honestly wished it closed completely. I don’t want to see anyone. In fact, don’t bother me at all.

You get a comforter, a pillow and a cute Cole Haah amenity kit. The amenity kit contains things you can use when you wake up. It has a tooth brush, tooth paste, mouth wash, chap stick. It contains a face mask, ear plugs and even an extra pair or socks in case you need to use the restroom in the middle of your slumber. It’s pretty neat.

Nothing spoils you like first and business class.

The Meal Service

The food came out around the first hour and a half. I decided to get the vegetarian option in an effort to continue broadening my in-flight horizons. I chose the portobello stuffed mushroom. it was stuffed with quinoa, feta cheese, spices. Surrounded by chopped beats and tomato sauce. Even thought the portion was small, it was damn tasty and very filling.

The weird thing about the meal service was the appetizer. Even though I got a veggie dinner, the appetizer is not vegetarian. I also didn’t get a say in whether or not I wanted it. Anyway, I’m not a vegetarian so no use in crying over dead shrimps. I ate those spicy ‘thangs’ right away and proceeded with my entree.

They came around with heated chocolate chip cookies which I also had. I thought that was the desert. I was wrong.

A few minutes later they came with a tray of ice cream Sundays. I mean, I had to get one. I ate that giant Sunday and felt so uncomfortable and stuffed I wish I had more restraint.

The Entertainment

I watched a couple of movies. First up is The Nun, which is somewhat disappointing but still informative. Then I watched The Spy Who Dumped Me. The Spy Who Dumped Me is amazing and there are many scenes in Berlin. A place I need to visit again. This just means I have to figure out how to navigate vacation time at work. You know, since I only really get one week every 6 months or so per year. Yeah, not okay with me.

I fell asleep shortly after with feelings of fatty guilt. I called myself a glutton more times than I can remember and slept for several hours before I awoke.

At this point they brought out breakfast. My picture of breakfast is bad I’ll include it.

The breakfast consist of scrambled eggs or yogurt. I got the scrambled eggs. They come with potatoes, a fruit bowl and a biscuit. The picture is bad but it’s actually really tasty!

After eating the meal the pilot announced our commencement of the entertainment system. This meant they collected the earphones about an hour before landing.

It’s true, what they say about first and business class… It ruins you. I mean, what do you mean this flight is almost over?

I used miles to pay for this flight… It’s damn worth it. If you’re considering a pod for a long flight like this, it is totally worth it.

We landed in Sao Paolo, ready to take-on this 8 hour layover. We booked a hotel inside the airport only to realize there was no way to get to it, from the inside or the outside! We’re trapped and don’t know what to do (more on this later.)

Let Me Break It Down For You:

DFW to GRU in a 777 on American Air is amazing.

You sit in your own pod

The meal service is deliscious

You get appetizer, dinner, desert, breakfast

I got the vegetarian stuffed portobello mushroom. It was small, but filling. It’s also good. I recommend it.

There are many  movies to choose from. I watched The Spy Who Dumped Me and The Nun. I also watched part of The Meg.

Business Class can be pricey though. I used points for this flight.

Is the Yellow Fever vaccination a new requirement? I was in Rio in 2015 and I was not asked for the yellow fever vaccination.

Its not a requirement unless u r going now. I was there in 2016 and it wasn’t required. Currently there is an outbreak of yellow fever in the area. Also its only a requirement if your layover is 10hrs or more. But they are turning people away even if your layover is short.
