British Airlines 747 From LAX to LHR in Basic Economy

The question on everyone’s mind is, “How was my British Airlines Flight?” They ask this because they’re wondering if I was treated like cattle for purchasing a basic economy ticket on American Airlines. The truth is British Air did a fantastic job the entire way.

If you haven’t read the post I made about purchasing basic economy plane tickets on American Airlines and what to expect, you might want to read it first. It will get you up to date on what’s going on in this flight report.

Getting back to the flight report

This British Airlines Boeing 747 is packed to the brim! Considering I thought I had to pay for my seat, I didn’t pick it until the day before my flight, when I decided I should just pay for it.

Basically, British Airlines doesn’t charge you for choosing your seat, even when you buy a basic economy ticket on AA.

This decision almost cost me an aisle seat. I purposefully chose a seat near the back because it was empty. And, who likes the back seats anyway? Everyone who’s buying a cheap ticket. That’s who.

Every seat was taken by the time we took off.

This Boeing 747 is a plane with three seats on each end and four seats in the middle. I sat on the aisle in the middle section.

Even though they say your status doesn’t count toward basic economy faces, I boarded first because of my status with American. So I found plenty of space for my backpack upon boarding.

The Seat

British Airlines shoulder space
I have wide shoulders… They’re basically always touching the person next to me.

My seat is a basic seat with a couple of inches of legroom.

I have broad shoulders, so that is always a concern of mine. In other words, my shoulders always touch the person next to me. It’s the price of being a swimmer, I guess.

One of the cool things about these seats is the headrest. I’ve never seen one that folds down, like a thick flap. Usually, the seat headrest bends forward, but this one was different.

The headrest on this flight was a thick giant flap that folded over. Never seen this before and I LOVED IT!

It was thick and stiff. It was very comfortable. I thought this might be on all British Airline flights, but they didn’t have this on the way back.

I got to watch some great movies on there. Although the TV screen in front of me was great but too close. I’m not complaining. It was okay, actually.

If you haven’t seen What We do in the Shadows, you should watch it if you’re into dark humor.

The Flight Attendants

The flight attendants were lovely. I was impressed. American Airlines flight attendants are friendly too, don’t get me wrong, but they don’t often go above and beyond unless you’re in first class.

What made the difference here is that the flight attendant that primarily worked with me seemed to really enjoy the flight. He was witty, smart, and joyful.

I understand that we all have a “game” face when it comes to work. I also work in the travel industry, and I always try to have a smile on my face and sound nice even if you’re a fucking dick. So I get it, it might not have been genuine. But, the difference here is that it came off as genuine.

The In-flight service

The flight attendant asked me if I wanted wine with my pretzels. I said, yes. I also asked for a Coke. He called it a meal. I seriously thought this was my meal. So small, maybe I need to pay for a bigger meal?

I started drinking my wine and eating my pretzels. I watched a movie as I let time pass.

Not too long afterward, they came by to ask if I wanted the vegetarian pasta or a meat option. I love me some pasta, so I got the pasta.

It came with a side salad and dressing, a bun, crackers, cheese, a bottle of water, and chocolate mousse.

The pasta is delicious. It’s hearty and flavorful. I didn’t eat the bun because I don’t need carbs with my carbs. But everything else is tasty.

After finishing my first dark comedy about vampires, I began to watch the Dark Phoenix, which was disappointing. I love X-men so much, it was sad that it wasn’t so great.

I fell asleep soon after the movie was finished. Surprisingly, I slept for a solid five hours, maybe slightly less. I woke up in time for breakfast.

The breakfast service wasn’t as great as dinner but still decent. I got the breakfast wrap option that did not have turkey bacon. I don’t like bacon. Basically, I got another veggie and eggs wrap.

My wrap feel apart. But you betta believe I still ate it! We don’t waste no food ’round these parts!

It was tasty, but it was a little soggy and hot. It was stuck to the box it came in so when I tore it open, the wrap broke apart.

I still tried to eat it, but it was a total mess. It comes with orange juice, a chocolate muffin, and some fruit.

I got coffee as a beverage.

The Entire Flight

We landed about an hour after this. The entire flight was exceptional. It helped that I was able to sleep for most of it. I have to say, I CANNOT sleep on those tiny cramped economy seating. Therefore the fact that this time, I slept well was a giant plus.

However, I have to say for an American Airlines basic economy ticket operated by British Airlines, I was thrilled with all the service. I loved the flight attendants, my seats, and the movies. It was a great flight overall.

Let me break it down for you:

This American Airlines basic economy fare was operated by British Airlines.

It was from LAX to LHR. The entire flight was about 10 hours.

The flight attendants were amazing.

My seat was basic, but good enough.

I got the tasty pasta for dinner. My breakfast, the egg wrap basically fell apart as I ate it.

It was a cheap ticket, and for this long of a flight, this British Air flight on this 747 in economy was definitely worth it for me.

I normally fly BA 90% of the time for my flights to and from America. I have mixed feeling about them. Some have been amazing others very average.

Fantastic post about your experience. Glad you enjoyed london too!
