Amaca Hotel Review| Puerto Vallarta | A Gay Hotel in the Gay Zone?

There are many hotel options in Puerto Vallarta. In fact, there are many gay-only hotels, party hotels, and social-oriented ones in the area. This time I stayed at the Amaca Hotel. Initially, I thought this was a gay-only hotel. Or is it just in the gay zone? Read on and find out!

The Amaca Hotel in Puerto Vallarta sits on top of a hill in the Zona Romantica or the gay area of the old city. Although it’s about six blocks from the water, it’s not too far from anything, making it a great and cheap place for your gaycation.

However, Amaca hotel is adults-only. This means, if you have kids, leave them behind!

At first, I thought the Amaca Hotel was gay, but considering I was here for White Party weekend, a widely celebrated gay party, it seems most people staying at the hotel are gay. But I discovered that Amaca is adults-only, not gay-only.

I don’t mind adult-only hotels, but I like gay hotels more. What’s better, gay-only hotels? Or no kids allowed?

Amaca Hotel Location

The Amaca hotel is in a good spot. You can walk into Swedes, a gay bar, and a restaurant if you go down the steps. From here you can walk to pretty much any place in the old city. The beach is a few minutes from here as well. All the gay bars and clubs are also within walking distance. If you’re looking for a gaycation, staying here is a good idea.

The funny thing is, I could hear the loud pop music from other celebratory White Party events from this hotel. Would you hate that, or does it just make you want to party more?!

The way back, it’s all uphill. I thought the walk back from the beach would kill me. However, with the help of the funicular that’s open from 9 am-11 pm, you don’t have to work as hard to get back to your room.

The Hotel Review

The hotel itself is beautiful. It’s your typical tropical vacation hotel. It consists of four floors. The rooftop has a pool and a bar. However, the views are spectacular. I came up here to look at the beautiful mountainside and take some pictures.

Considering it’s White Party weekend, I thought the rooftop pool would be packed with guys swimming and drinking all day. But there was no one in the pool, EVER! It’s small, but that’s beside the point. Maybe it gets full on other occasions?

If it’s not crawling with swarms of party-goers this party weekend, maybe this pool is never in use? Have you stayed here in the past? Was the pool area hopping? I would love to know. Leave me a comment.

Hotel Amaca Puerto Vallarta lobby
The lobby is cute and authentically Mexica. I loved it.

You should also be aware Amaca has no elevators. You’ll need to take the stairs up and down to your room.

It’s an open-air plan which allows the air to flow throughout the building. The lobby is cute, filled with art. They include free coffee in the mornings.

I got coffee a couple of times. Unfortunately, no gays chatting. I only saw families interacting with each other.

The check-in process is simple. They give you an AC and TV remote for your room and a key. They have the wi-fi password on the wall as well. The staff is very friendly and nice.

At night, they lock the front door. Just ring the bell, and they’ll let you right in.

The Room

The room is fully functional but very interesting. Although I enjoyed my stay, there are some flaws I should mention.

To start with, the room is pretty large and spacious, which is always a plus. The bed is massive. Our room had a king-size bed. They had cute Mexican candy on the bed when we arrived. The bed is so firm I thought it was great. If you don’t like a firm mattress, it might be too hard for you.

There’s a hammock inside the room. I used it every day.

The large flat-screen TV and mini-fridge stood opposite the bed, against the wall.

The AC is powerful, even though at first I didn’t know how to set it to the proper temperature. After I figured it out, it was perfect.

They have a nice size balcony. Depending on where your room is, your view is different. We had a view of the nearby buildings and the ocean.

The Restroom

Hotel Amaca Puerto Vallarta toilet
The restroom is way too big… Well actually this is just the toilet stall in your room. I swear it can double as another room. It’s also so white in there! LOL

The restroom is awkward. There is a toilet stall that’s so big. It can double as another room. It’s also so white in there! LOL

In other words, the toilet is inside a separate area with a door that closes. I’m not sure if this is for handicap purposes, but considering there are no elevators in the building, someone in a wheelchair won’t get into their room anyway.

The restroom door is a little finicky too. It locked itself at night, and we couldn’t get inside the following day. I had to work my magic and try to open it from the outside, which I did.

The vanity was right outside the toilet stall. It has everything you need. The soaps and lotions smelled very good. The shampoos and conditioners are great. However, the light on the vanity is not stellar. It’s so dim. I feel like it only worked well at night.

The shower and tub is more of a “DIY project.” Considering I’m Mexican, I know this type of construction all too well. My family has done things like this to save money and time.

It’s a square tub that doesn’t have a water spout at the bottom actually to fill it. The curtains are jerry-rigged with a string and plastic sheets that don’t close all the way.

The shower itself is a pipe sticking out of the walls. If you’re too tall, you’ll have to crouch down to shower. The pressure is not great either, but that’s not their fault.

To top it off, the shower is inside the bedroom, so I hope you’re traveling with someone close enough that it doesn’t matter if you see each other naked. Otherwise, it might make for an awkward stay.

I’m not complaining. I just want you to know the facts. The prices are under $100 USD, which makes this place a steal. Even with the weird shower and restroom, it doesn’t matter at this price.

The shower and the vanity. That open door to the right, thats the toilet.

Let Me Break It Down For You:

  • Amaca Hotel in Puerto Vallarta is an adults-only hotel, not a gay-only hotel.
  • It’s under $100 USD per night.
  • Even though it’s up the hill, the location is perfect.
  • There’s a hammock in your room.
  • The balcony is cute.
  • The rooms are perfect, and the AC is powerful.
  • Restrooms are a little odd, but it’s okay.
  • Do I recommend it? For the prices and the locations. Yes. I do!
