Bar Anonimo | Gay Puerto Vallarta | 2019 update

I hit a few of the gay bars in Puerto Vallarta. Other than Bar Anonimo, which means anonymous in Spanish, I also visited, Swedes, Garbo and La Cueva. However, the one place I had the most memorable experience on this trip is Bar Anonimo. I always have a great time here but this time was different. Before I begin the story, I really want to say Bar Anonimo is a bar worth checking out, for sure!

Recently, they’ve opened a third floor and big rooftop patio. With a total of three floors, three bars, a rooftop patio this place is becoming one of my favorite gay bars to hit. They also have a small menu in case you get the munchies.

Lets start with the bar itself. Bar Anonimo is tiny but now with three floors it’s making up for it. The walls are colorful and full of murals. There are murals on the ceilings and colorful tiles on the booths and tables. The walls are purple but the dim light and black lights make it fluorescent which works great.

I’ve been to Bar Anonimo several times throughout my visits to Puerto Vallarta, but I usually grab a quick drink and go. This time around, I decided to stay for several drinks. On this particular night, I did not have a good time, but it’s also an interesting story to tell. So, I’m going to say it!

Let’s Give You Some Background First

I should probably give you a bit of information on my personality. I’m different to say the least. Some people may even call me strange. I don’t exactly fit in anywhere. To simplify, I like what I like and I am who I am but I’m not apologetic about it, even though sometimes I feel like I have to be.

I am a lover of horror movies, gothic art and industrial music. Ugly and scary things fascinate me. One of my favorite artists is Marylin Manson and I love talking about things you or others find creepy. However, I should say that’s just part of my personality.

On the other side, I do love pop music. If it’s good I’ll listen to it, but I always have an opinion on it. I don’t care if it’s Madonna or Kesha.  If I think it sucks, you’re going to hear about how much I think it sucks, even if THE ENTIRE WORLD thinks it’s an amazing song. I’m never rude about it but I acknowledge that I have a different perspective than others.

Lets Go Back to Bar Anonimo

Bar Anonimo Drinks
Several Gin and Tonics later and my weird and quirky personality that no one sees came right out and said “BOO MOTHERFUCKERS!”

I’m going to try to stay as neutral as possible but it’s not going to be easy. To be completely upfront, I believe Bar Anonimo is one of those bars to get the party started.

On this particular night, I was on my fourth Gin and Tonic, a drink of choice. They’re somewhat strong. I’m enjoying myself. The bar is somewhat empty. When I say empty I mean there’s plenty of room to stand and walk around. Most of the seats are taken. Lets say 15 people total.

The two British guys next to the computer playing random YouTube videos of pop music are taking turns picking fun pop songs. However, they kept asking me to choose a song. I don’t seek out pop music so I don’t know it well. I mean, I love Shakira and other songs I hear at gay bars, but I passed every time.

Insisting on having me pick a song, they keep coming back around. So, I thought hard about it… and I finally came up with a song. It’s a song I’ve heard and seen in other gay bars in Los Angeles. It’s weird but funny. It’s catchy and since I’ve seen the video played at gay bars, I would call it gay bar appropriate.

Was I wrong!? 100%! I asked the boys to play a song called Big Bad Wolf by Duck Sauce. The song itself is pretty cool. No lyrics really but its a catchy tune. However, the music video is weird and funny and just random as hell. It’s a fictional themed video about genitalia. What if we had another face and head in between our legs instead of the genitalia we have now? That’s the premise of the music video. You can check it out below:

The two British guys are so freaked out by my video they began booing and decided to get the entire bar to boo me. Now that the entire bar was booing me, one of the guys comes up to me and tells me I’m not allowed to pick another song. To which I responded “I told you I don’t know this type of music. This is just something they play at the gay bars in LA.” I shrug my shoulders and that was pretty much that…

Other people seemed to enjoy the weirdness of the video… At least that’s what I thought until they all booed me. To me, that’s a sign of “basicness.” If you can’t deal with something a little edgy/fun then you’re basic. It’s not even edgy for Los Angeles which I find tame on most occasions. To be honest, I should have known better. Growing up in a Mexican family I’ve learned that my taste was always too much for most people.

Even though I’ve always thought Bar Anonimo is the bar you go for a drink or two, this experience made me feel like it really is a place to drink up but not really stick around to meet others.

Will I come back to this place? Yes of course. Bar Anonimo is one of the cutest bars in the city. I absolutely love it and one bad experience is not going to make me stop coming here.

Lets get back to a more positive spin

On a busy night, this bar gets full really quickly. The bartenders have a heavy pour which means your drinks are strong. They’re also very friendly and genuine. The drinks are cheap and it’s a great place to start the night off.

While I was here I noticed the clientele is mostly younger guys. Considering the drinking age is 18 years old in Mexico, the people I saw had to be at least 18-20 years of age. It’s a good place for young guys and men who love them. I’m not attracted to younger men. Therefore, this bar is not for cruising… If you are, then this is probably a good place to pick up a young pup.

Let me break it down for you:

Bar Anonimo is a place to start your night. Grab a drink or two to get the party started. That’s what I usually do when I come here. I always have a great time when I’m here. Although this time I didnt have as great a time as I have in the past, it makes for a great story. Will I return? You bet.

The drinks are cheap and strong. The bartenders are very nice and genuine.

Do I recommend it? I do. Especially now that they have three levels, three bars and one great outdoor patio. Come check it out!
