Bibo Hong Kong | The Coolest Restaurant in the World!

Bibo golden door
The golden door of Bibo and me.

The coolest restaurant I’ve ever been to is Bibo Hong Kong.

This restaurant is tucked far down Hollywood Rd and hidden via trap door. Well, I suppose at some point there was a sign that said Bibo, but now, it’s just a golden door with no way of knowing how to open it.

If you notice, there’s a gold bar sticking out of the sidewalk. On top of the bar, there’s a button. If you push the button, the door slides into the concrete wall, like you just opened the door to a spaceship.

The first thing you see is a cruddy staircase that goes up and down. Head downstairs.

Here you will see a host at the far end of the restaurant.

The restaurant is shaped like an “L” in a way. The food is French and it’s very pricey. Everything on the menu is delicious.

But why is this the coolest restaurant in the world? Well, not only is the food amazing. The

Dining here is one of my coolest experiences I’ve had the pleasure to eat in…

service is fantastic. With the high-end prices comes high-end service. They are very attentive, but not overly so.

The first time I went to Bibo Hong Kong was around their opening. The place was hopping. Each table was filled. Standing next to each table was an employee waiting for you to stand or go to the restroom so they can assist with your chair. They folded your napkin as you were gone and tidied up your table as well.

This time around, the place was empty. It seems the happening spot I remember is not so happening anymore. However, it’s the same great restaurant it was before.

I could be wrong about this but it seems as though Bibo Hong Kong commissions prestigious artist to decorate their space. Time after time, the art has been different. However, this time, it seemed permanent. Maybe this just means I’ll have to check it out again and see for myself.

The first time I visited Bibo, it had dead doll sculptures melting into each other. Each doll dripping with blood in a pile, like a small mountain by the side of your table. The likes of Chiho Aoshima works of art on display in the hallways. Scary anime woman screaming and scared. The art is bizarre but amazing at the same time. It is my kind of art and my kind of spooky place.

This time was no different. The art is spectacular. A giant Kaws sculpture catches your eye behind near your table. Shepard Fairey murals lined the hallways and Paris’ Invader tiles covered the windows and lined the archways.

The look and feel is still here.

Bibo Hong Kong Three Years Later

The art here is incredible

The art is incredible and so is the food. Has it changed? Yes. We were one of 3 tables today. Perhaps it fills up during weekends. Hong Kong is definitely a party town but more so on weekends. Weekdays, expect certain places to be less crowded.

I love art. For all intents and purposes I stray beyond the norm. I also love many things everyday people do not like. I love weirdness and strange music. However, the two other tables sitting with us were Americans who embodied the stereotype of the strange artist. The Millennial Hipster that accidentally discovered beatniks this year. It was annoying.

It also annoyed me that they constantly overhead everything I was saying. I talked about a place I love in SoHo (New York City,) suddenly they talked about SoHo. I talked about certain aspects of the gay community, suddenly they brought up their gay fiends. How about you mind your own business and get your own voice?

That’s besides the point. Bibo Hong Kong, still awesome. I just hope the allure hasn’t gone away.

If you’re ever in Hong Kong and feel the need for a luxurious French dinner, head to Bibo. It’s definitely a must.
