Remember watching Blade Runner (the original) and watching the awesome Atari logo all over the beautiful futuristic highrises and thinking, “Wow, I wonder if the future will look like that?” Well, I’m here to tell you that, yes, it is. It’s exciting news for video game lovers and travelers alike because Atari is coming out with Atari Hotels.
It’s been so long since any of us have heard anything about this once mega-giant video gaming company. Some of us even assumed Atari was gone entirely. In fact, in 2013, the US branch of Atari filed for bankruptcy. However, the French branch of Atari is still thriving. In this case, they are the cause of the Atari Hotels.
So What is an Atari Hotel?
Essentially an Atari Hotel is a videogame themed hotel with lots of videogame consoles to play. You can have videogame slumber parties or even children’s birthday parties.
Although all of that might sound like a bunch of chaos for a business traveler, Atari Hotels offers so much more than just rooms with video games beeping at you throughout the night.
For starters, the world of gaming is quickly evolving, and most gamers consider it the future. Although I don’t consider myself a gamer, I recently bought a pair of virtual reality headsets made by Facebook, called the Oculus Go and it has blown my mind.
Besides, I am more surprised people aren’t using virtual reality for things like business meetings and such. Its easy, fun, and practical. If your business is spread throughout the world, VR can help a ton!
Getting back to Atari Hotels, Atari plans on building nostalgic and retro style rooms for the guest who wishes to stay in a hotel reminiscent of Pong, Pac Man, or even Space Invaders, for example.
However, considering the future of gaming, Atari Hotels will also encompass state of the art virtual reality gaming and augmented reality gaming within their hotel.
This means, not only will you be able to put on a virtual reality headset to play games, but the hotel itself will also be part of the video game you chose to play. Think of games like Pokemon Go that use real space and time that you can engage with.
I don’t know about you, but I am very excited about this.
When to Expect?
According to Atari’s website, the first hotel will break ground spring of 2020. Destination: Pheonix, Arizona.
Phoenix, Arizona, is a city that’s booming faster than other cities in the United States. Its also urban, efficient, gay and futuristic. If you haven’t been to Pheonix in a while, this is a good reason to go.
Atari also plans to build Atari Hotels in Las Vegas, Denver, Chicago, Seattle, Austin Texas, San Francisco, and San Jose, California.
Atari estimates it will take two years for the first hotel to complete. I cannot wait! I want to be the first to try it.
